Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
