2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Rescue Struggling Action Game Project Ethos
2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Follows Poor Response
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a more defined direction.
The president stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Hires
This announcement follows a similar move taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Below is the entire content from the president's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”
With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It affirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the need for a sharper identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s ready to deliver on its ambition to our audience.
The trust in this project increases every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the new Lead of 31st Union. After a period of conversations, he comes aboard us on the specified date.
Ben’s guidance and experience in the PVP shooter space is vast, having dedicated the recent years producing and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in welcoming Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to continue seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to come.
The President
Experience of the Incoming Leader
The appointee presently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in various production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Details and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a early access event. Initially, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Challenge the competition with new abilities, challenges, and obstacles that change every session. Will you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The choice is yours."
The game lacks an announced launch window or consoles, but players can expect more updates as development continues.
